Confession time. I’m a shoe guy. Some might say I have an addiction. Shoes, of any kind, are my most prized articles of clothing. I’m “that guy” that looks for every opportunity to buy a new pair. Dirty shoes? Scuffed shoes? Solution—buy a new pair. Some people might call it a problem. Perhaps they’re right.

Ok, fine, they’re right.

I often think to myself: you do realize that you could save yourself a lot of money if you would simply make use of what you have? This thought comes, occasionally lingers, and then more often than not, flees.

Again, I realize this is a problem.

This “utilizing our assets the way they ought to be utilized” principle is something that ought to be considered, not only personally, but also professionally. How is YOUR business utilizing its current assets? What are you doing with your available technology? How is your business handling its online presence?

Is it time for your business to polish its social media shoes?

Yes.

In the business world, LinkedIn may be one of the pairs that are in need of some shoeshine. Your business may have worn them once, only to be thrown to the back of the closet. It’s time to find them again, and here’s how:

Re-sole with recommendations: Individuals have the capability to write recommendations about your business on your profile page, which is then shared across your network. When appropriate, be sure to return the favor—recommend those that you have worked with. Also, don’t be afraid to request recommendations! Recommendations will build trust and credibility on both ends.

Shoe scrub with a customized URL: Customization is available for any profile. Personalized links are more professional. Not to mention, it is a lot easier to share a URL that does not entail confusing numbers and letters.

Lather your loafers with active engagement: Many companies have found great success in lead generation for hiring new employees and seeking out customers by participating in groups and utilizing the many apps featured on the site. LinkedIn provides businesses with a platform to share news, business tips, and other useful information. Create a personality for your business! Active engagement is key to a successful LinkedIn experience.

Re-heel by recruiting: LinkedIn is specifically designed for business networking.  There are increasing numbers of businesses that currently utilize LinkedIn for recruiting the right people with the right talent. LinkedIn allows businesses to connect directly with others for mutual growth. Searches are often location specific. This reach can be local or international. LinkedIn’s public profiles give you the capability of connecting with those outside your network, which might not have been possible with a private profile.

Believe it or not, there are also mistakes that individuals and businesses often make with their profiles. Make sure your business refrains from displaying incomplete or out-of-date information, having a non-custom web address, or not having a profile picture. Don’t let your business get caught up in any of these toe stubs.

Capitalizing on your business’s social assets, specifically LinkedIn, may work wonders for your increased growth and development. We hear it all the time, but there is always room for improvement. As a matter of fact, as I look down at my shoes today, it looks like they still have some potential despite a scuff or two. I think I’ll take the time to clean them.
